It's first route was to Palma de Mallorca, still an important hub for the airline. After German reunification in 1990, the airline received invetstment from German investers and considderably increased it's number of routes. In 2004 Air Berlin aquired a 24% stake in Lauda Air, the airline founded by Nikki Lauda, and in 2006, aquired dba. In 2007, Air Berlin is in the process of buying the German airline LTU which has a fleet of 26 aircraft. Also in 2007, the airline was in talks to takeover the airline Condor, which would have seen Thomas Cook (owned by the same parent company as Condor) taking shares in Air Berlin. These negotiations came to end however in 2008 due the changing economic climate at the time. Unlike other low cost airlines, Air Berlin achieves efficiency by routing via hubs, meaning a change of planes, but timed to still give a reasonable overall traveling time.
