Alitalia, the national airline of Italy, is based at Rome Leonardo Da Vinci International Airport with a hub at Malpensa International Airport, Milan.

The airline started fluing passengers in 1947 with the first International flight the following year.

By the 1990´s Alitalia was carrying but has struggled financially in the 2000's.
At the end of 2006 the airline was 49% owned by the Italian governement which is looking to bring in new investment and reduce that share in 2007.
