Finnair, Finlands national airline, dates back to 1923, although the name finnair was not used until 1953, with seaplanes being used intil Finlands first airport was built in 1936.

The Finnish goverment took a major stake in the airline in 1946 and flights to the rest of Europe were restarted after the restrictions of world War 2.

Finnair now has a fleet of 50 aircraft, carrying 8.8 million passengers in 2006, and is rated as the second safest airline in the world (After Quantas).
