Iberia, the largest airline in Spain, based at Madrid and Barcelona, started life in 1928 but came under state control in 1928 and merged into a larger company and ceased to exist in 1929.

After the Spanish Civil war (1936-39) the name Iberia reappeared.The company was nationalised in 1944 then privatised in 2001.

Iberia, together with its regional subsidiary, Air Nostrum, now has a fleet of 230 aircraft and transported 27 million passengers in 2006.
