In 1989, KLM aquired 20% of NorthWest Airlines, an American airline with a fleet of 600 aircraft, and the two companies formed a close alliance. In 2003, KLM and Air France Merged, making KLM a subsidiary of Air France KLM. The airline still keeps the KLM name and the alliance with NorthWest.
