20/04/10 50% fo Europe Flights Expected Today
Eurocontrol, the European Organisation for the Safety of Air NAvigation have stated that they expect approximately 50% of normal European flights to take place today, compared with approximately 33% yesterday.
It appears however, that although there is some easing of the situation, productions are very difficult to the changing natur of the Icelandic volcano and the resulting ash cloud.
NATS, the UK National Air Traffic Service stated earlier today that some Scottish airports were expected to be open together with English airports as far south as Newcastle. Flights were also expected to be allowed over 20,000 feet over resticted areas as they would be above the ash.
The Irish Aviation Authority state that Shannon should be open this afternoon but Dublin (and most likely Cork also) remains closed
As for the rest of Europe, Eurocontrol have stated that there are "significant restrictions, in the lower airspace primarily in north-western Europe, including Denmark, Estonia, Finland, north France, north Italy, Latvia, Slovenia, Slovakia, Ukraine and UK. In the upper airspace above 20,000 feet, all European airspace is available."
