20/04/10 Civil Aviation Authority Use New Guidance to Allow Flying in Low Levels of Ash
In a statement issued earlier today, the UK Civil Aviation Authority stated that following work in conjunction with the Irish Aviation Authority, new guidelines would allowing flying in much of the airspace currently under restictions. Flights in these areas will require extra checks on the aircraft engines to ensure passenger safety.
Flights are to be phased in at UK and Irish airports from 10.00pm this evening.
There will still be some areas where the concentration of ash is considered too high but at the time of the CAA statement, there were no such areas over the UK.
Eurocontrol, the European Organisation for the Safety of Air Navigation, stated earlier today:
"Almost 75% of the total continent area is free of any restrictions. This area includes: Austria, the Balkan area, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Italy, southern France, Greece, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Romania, northern Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine."
It will be up to individual airlines to decide when they return to their normals schedules - passengers are advised to check with their airlines for further information.
