16/07/10 New Flight Disruption Possibility as Unite Ballot BAA Staff
In a statement today by Unite, the union, it was announced that after months of negotiations, they are to ballot over 6000 staff working for BAA, on taking strike action. The dispute has been over their propsed pay rise this year after having had a pay freeze last year.
BAA, the owners of London Heathrow, London Stansted, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Southampton airports, have stated that they are disappointed that Unite are taking this step as they believe their pay rise offer is reasonable in the current economic conditions.
According to the Unite statement, BAA had prviously agreed to a 450 pound payrise for staff as long as the company hit their profit target of 1.2 billion. The union claims that as the target was only missed by 3%, that staff should still be rewarded.
The ballot is set to run from July 23rd to August 12th, after which, the union would need to give at least 7 days notice of any planned strike action
