12/08/10 BAA Staff Vote in Favour of Strike Action
The ballot of BAA staff by Unite shows a substantial vote for strike action, according the union website, although no announcement on planned action has been made.
Any strike action could affect Heathrow, Stansted, Glasgow, Southampton, Edinburgh and Aberdeen airports, where firefighters, security officers, engineers and workers in various support roles have been negociating a pay rise this year after having had a pay freeze last year.
BAA's comment on the union announcement however points out that there was a less than 50% turnout for the vote and suggest that the union do not have the mandate for strike action claimed.
Meanwhnile, air traffic controllers in Spain withdrew their threat to take strike action earlier this week, stating that they had no wish to hurt the county's tourism industry further.
