Flybe started in 1979 as Jersey European Airways and in 2002 first changed the name to British European Airways and then to Flybe.
In 2006 the airline acquired BA Connect from British Airways, greatly increasing number of domestic routes.
In 2010, Flybe signed a deal with Embraer for up to 140 Embraer 175 aircraft in support of its planned European growth. Later that year the company was floated on the stock exchange, raising a further 66 million pounds towards fleet expansion.
It 2011, it was announced that in a joint venture with Finnair, Flybe had bought Finlands largest domestic airline, Finnish Commuter Airlines. Flybe is to have a 60% stake in the joint venture which is to be branded Flybe Nordic.
In February 2019, Flybe was sold to Connect Airways consortium, which is partly owned by Virgin Atlantic and Stobart Air. This is expected to result in the Flybe name disappearing in the future.
Flybe transported 9.5 million passengers in 2018, a 7% increase from the previous year.
