The airline started operating in 1961 as a charter airline under the name Adria Aviopromet, with a single Douglas DC-6 (a four, piston engined aircraft).
The airline started international scheduled flights in 1983, and this now makes up the major part of its business.

After the break up of Yugoslavia in the 1990s, Adria Airways became the flag carrier for Slovenia.

The airline developed, invested in new aircraft, and built a new head quarters in the first decade of the 21st century but was making a loss.
In 2011, a re-financing agreement was achieved with investment from the Slovenian government and banks converting part of their loans into ownership.

Adria Airways carried just over 1.2 million passengers in 2017, an increase of 9% from the previous year.
