13/01/09 A New Beginning for Alitalia Pleases Some
The Italian flag carrier, Alitalia, having been in financial trouble for some time, has a new beginning, with Air France/KLM taking a 25 stake.
The new Alitalia, owned by a group of Italian investors, incorporates the best parts of the old Alitalia, plus their privately owned rival, Air One.
The airline retains it's logos and livery, pleasing the many Italians wanting Alitalia to stay Italian.
However not everyone is happy with the outcome and the new slimmed down airline (less aircraft and considerably less employees), particularly workers in the north of the country, who fear that Malpensa and Linate Milan airports will be sidelined in favour of Rome.
Those in the north favoured the involvement of the German airline Lufthansa in the belief that this would favour the northern Italian airports. However, although Lufthansa had shown interest in Alitalia (as had British Airways at one stage) this didn't proceed to fruition.
